A man is dead after his companion mistook him for a deer and shot him while hunting, authorities said.

Glynn County police encountered Bobby Lane and Hector Romero at the Friendly Express gas station off U.S. 82 in Waynesville, the department said in a statement.

The shooting happened in a wooded area near Myers Hill Road, police said. Investigators determined Lane and Romero had gone to the area to hunt.

During the hunt, Lane was hidden by heavy foliage and was mistaken for a deer, police said. Romero shot him, police said.

Romero then took Lane to the Friendly Express so he could be transferred to an ambulance. Lane was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The incident is still under investigation.
