The Gainesville Police Department is investigating after human remains were found Friday in a shallow grave near the site of a carnival.

Investigators said it is still too early to conclude the case is a homicide, but foul play has not been ruled out, according to police spokeswoman Cpl. Jessica Van.

The remains were found in a drainage culvert near the site of the carnival off Browns Bridge Road, she said. A passerby noticed the remains in the wooded area and called police, she said.

Investigators said the grave had become exposed due to erosion over time.

Officials said the remains might have been there for several years before they were found. They were taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy that is scheduled for Monday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Gainesville police at 770-534-5251.
