The U.S. secretaries of labor and agriculture will visit Gwinnett Technical College Friday to announce funding for a program to provide education and training to help food stamp recipients transition from government assistance to the work world.
Georgia, which is expected to receive a grant of several million dollars, is among several states selected for the program designed to test innovative ways to help unemployed or underemployed people transition off of food assistance programs and compete for positions in today’s job market.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Department of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez will be joined by college administrators, government officials and business leaders in announcing the grant.
Beginning last year, the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services began a pilot program called SNAP Works in about 10 counties, including DeKalb, Clayton, Gwinnett and Rockdale. The program is being expanded to 17 counties. The program gets its name from the formal name for the food stamp program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
