A man being sought by authorities shot and killed himself late Friday morning in south DeKalb County, police said, shutting down a major thoroughfare and prompting the lockdown of a nearby private school.
The incident happened around 10 a.m. on Flat Shoals Road near Panthersville Road.
"We had a multi-agency law enforcement task force that was trying to apprehend a wanted suspect," DeKalb police Capt. F.P. Braun told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Braun said that after a brief car chase ended in a wreck on Flat Shoals, "it appears that the suspect shot himself and is deceased."
Braun would not identify the suspect or say why he was being sought.
The incident prompted officials at a nearby private school to put the campus on lockdown.
According to an email sent to parents of students at the New Life Christian Academy of Achievers on Flat Shoals Road, "there has been an incident that has occurred in front of our campus."
The 10:19 a.m. email went on to say that DeKalb police and sheriff's deputies were on the scene, and, "all is well with NLCAA and students are safe. We have placed the school on lockdown as a safety measure until further notice."
Flat Shoals Road remained shut down early Friday afternoon.
