A cyclist was in critical condition after being struck by a tractor-trailer Friday afternoon in downtown Atlanta, according to police.

The man, whose name was not released, was riding his bicycle eastbound on Ivan Allen Boulevard when witnesses reported that traffic had stopped, according to Sgt. Greg Lyon with Atlanta police.

The man was riding in between vehicles when the light turned green as he approached Centennial Olympic Park Drive, Lyon said. He was hit after allegedly making an abrupt turn in front of a tractor-trailer.

"The driver of the tractor-trailer reported there was nothing he could do," Lyon said in an emailed statement. "The bicycle came out from between two cars and then was in front of his truck."

The man was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Criminal charges are not expected in the crash, which remains under investigation, Lyon said.
