Not everything is permissible in the name of homework.

That’s what a Barrow County Sheriff’s Deputy told an Auburn, Ga., resident who admitted to making explosions, but for a good cause — he said he was helping his nephew conduct a science experiment.

A concerned resident called police after hearing what he thought were gunshots at his neighbor’s house. He reported to deputies that his neighbor told him he was making bombs.

But the neighbor told the deputy he was conducting a science experiment for his nephew. “He was mixing chemicals in a plastic bottle that by combining the materials would cause an explosion,” Officer P. Busby said in a Sept. 1 incident report.

The resident agreed to stop causing the explosions, Busby reported. “I … advised him that, while his intentions were innocent, the mixing of the chemicals for the purpose of creating an explosion was not a good idea,” he wrote in the report.

No charges were filed following the complaint.

Auburn is 42 miles northeast of Atlanta.
