A groundskeeper at Clayton State University was killed when a car hit him in a campus parking lot, officials said.

Robert L. Andrews, 25, of Jonesboro, died Monday when a Toyota Camry struck him, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The fatal wreck happened about 9:45 a.m. Andrews died at the scene, the GSP said.

In a statement, Clayton State confirmed Andrews was a member of the facilities management team.

His mother, Malinda Dyer, said Andrews was an alumnus of the university. She told Channel 2 Action News it took him six years and several schools to finish his degree.

“I’m thinking to myself, ‘Are we going to do this?’ And he finally did it,” Dyer told the news station.

Andrews graduated in 2018 and began working at the school in November of that year, Channel 2 reported.

His mother said the university has not provided many details about what led to Andrews’ death. She told Channel 2 she doesn’t understand how he was fatally hit in a parking lot.

“I can't even imagine at this point,” she said. “I'm trying not to.”

The driver of the Camry has not been charged, according to the State Patrol.
