The driver of an SUV was killed in a crash with a school bus Wednesday in Gwinnett County, police said.

Darwin McEntyre, 80, of Buford, was killed when his black 2010 Chevrolet Equinox smashed head-on into the school bus, Gwinnett police said.

The wreck happened just before 3 p.m. at Pucketts Mill Road and Hamilton Mill Road, according to Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera.

Five students and two adults, including the driver, were aboard the bus at the time, Pihera said. The driver suffered a minor injury but was not taken to a hospital, police said.

Investigators said McEntyre was driving the SUV north on Hamilton Mill Road while the bus was heading south. While approaching the traffic light near Cascade Falls Drive, McEntyre lost control of the car and crossed into oncoming traffic, Pihera said.

The students, who were from Ivy Creek Elementary School, were moved to a second bus and taken to their destination, Channel 2 Action News reported. They were all between the ages of 3 and 7, police confirmed.

Police are looking into the possibility that McEntyre was having a medical emergency when the crash happened, Pihera said. The Gwinnett medical examiner will make the final determination.

Hamilton Mill Road was closed while officials worked to clean up the wreck. The road reopened shortly before 5:30 p.m.

The wreck was the second involving a school bus in metro Atlanta within two days. In DeKalb County, brake failure caused a school bus carrying nine elementary school students to collide with a tree Tuesday. One student had minor injuries.
