A South Georgia man was arrested Tuesday after police found his girlfriend dead in a hotel room.

David Chavell Monroe, 39, of Folkston was arrested and charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend Ruthene Tukes, 62, according to WJXT, a news station in Jacksonville.

Tukes was a guest at an Econo Lodge in Kingsland when she was found about 1 a.m. dead of head trauma, the news station reported.

Police later found Monroe at his home wearing shoes and shorts covered in blood. Tukes’ car was parked in the front yard.

Tukes’ daughter Shameka Tukes told the news station her mother met Monroe when she would travel from Florida for ministry work. The relationship with Monroe was Ruthene Tukes’ second chance at love after her husband died two years ago, her daughter said.

Shameka Tukes, who stays in Jacksonville, had filed a restraining order against Monroe, WJXT reported, which is why her mother would drive to Georgia to be with him.
