A house fire in Statham led to a man being flown to a hospital with extensive burns “over much of his body,” authorities said.

About 4 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to the house fire where the man was severely injured, Barrow County Emergency Services said in a Facebook post. The man was flown to a nearby burn center, and his condition was not provided.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire was propane leaking from an improperly installed wall heater unit, the post said. An open flame came close to the leaking device, starting the fire.

The fire department used this as an important reminder that “any installation or repair of appliances using (propane and natural gas) need to be performed by trained professionals who know and follow building codes and regulations.”
