Alcohol was a factor in a crash that left two people seriously injured when a driver in Cobb County lost control and slammed into a utility pole Sunday, police said.

The crash happened about 3 a.m. on Old Concord Road north of Pat Mell Road, according to Cobb police spokeswoman Officer Sydney Melton.

Eligardo Perez, 32, of Smyrna, was driving a white 1995 Chevrolet Astro northbound when he lost control, Melton said. The Astro left the roadway and crashed into a pole.

Neither Perez nor a passenger in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Melton said.

Perez was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. His injuries are non-life-threatening, Melton said.

The passenger, 29-year-old Manual Lopez-Martinez of Smyrna, was also taken to Kennestone with non-life-threatening injuries, Melton said.

No one has been charged in the incident, but investigators said criminal charges are expected.
