A small plane crashed into an empty daycare building in Fort Myers Saturday morning, killing one person and injuring another, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The Piper PA 28 aircraft crashed right after it took off in a nearby airfield around 8 a.m., Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The crash caused a fire, leading to major damage to the building.

It is still not known what caused the crash and the Federal Aviation Administration and National transportation Safety Board are investigating.

The sheriff’s office said no daycare members were at the scene at the time of the crash. The injured victim was taken to a local hospital, with the person’s condition unknown.
