A teenage boy riding an ATV was killed Tuesday afternoon after being struck on a busy Clayton County road, authorities said.

Police said the fatal crash occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Ga. 138 near Riverdale. The boy was trying to cross the highway near Embassy Trace when he was struck by a driver in the eastbound lanes.

Clayton County police have not released the teen’s name.

Video filmed by Channel 2 Action News appeared to show the mangled 4-wheeler in front of a silver sedan with major front-end damage. Witnesses told the news station there was another boy on a second ATV who appeared distraught about what happened to his friend.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries in the crash, Clayton County police said.

Ga. 138 was shut down for several hours between Ga. 314 and Ga. 85 as police investigated the crash, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
