After a four-hour standoff after two Baton Rouge Police Department officers were shot Sunday, the suspect has surrendered, according to reporter Johnston von Springer of news station WBRZ.
A 21-year veteran officer has died and another, a seven-year veteran, was “fighting for his life in the hospital,” WBRZ reported. No IDs have been released for the officers.
A procession left the hospital where the officers were taken, according to WBRZ.
Police negotiators spoke with a male suspect before he surrendered, according to reporter Jackie DeRobertis. The suspect later was identified as Ronnie Kato.
During negotiations, about 20 gunshots were heard from the scene, according to reporter Abbi Rocha.
It was unclear who fired the shots, according to news station WAFB.
The man suspected of shooting the officers was wanted in connection with an earlier domestic violence homicide Sunday, a source close to the investigation told The Advocate.
The officers were hospitalized, according to The Advocate, but one passed away.
A neighbor allegedly heard three gunshots near Conrad and North Foster Drive when the officers were shot, DeRobertis reported.
People should avoid the area.
Officers gathered for a vigil at the hospital, according to reporter Therese Apel.
