The suspect involved in a shooting Tuesday morning near the Buncombe County Courthouse in Asheville, North Carolina, reportedly was killed and an officer was injured, Rondell Lance, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police, told ABC News 15.
The officer, who reportedly was hit with glass, went to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The active shooting was reported at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds office Tuesday morning, causing the building to go into lockdown.

According to Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller, it started with shots fired from a parked car outside the courthouse at 9:49 a.m.,  ABC 15 News reported.

A 911 active shooting was called, and eyewitnesses showed police cars heading to the scene. By 10:01 a.m., the shooter was reportedly down.

As of 10:26 a.m., police reported there was no longer a threat at the courthouse.

Miller confirmed the suspect was killed and one officer injured during the crossfire. The injured lieutenant is recovering.

Buncombe County used its emergency notification system to tell residents to "avoid downtown Asheville," according to local source Citizen Times.

Asheville City Councilman Keith Young said he could hear the shots from inside an office on the first floor.

District Attorney Todd Williams said no courthouse personnel were injured.

Drew Reisinger, Buncombe County's register of deeds, heard shots and saw the police response unfold from his office, according to Citizen Times.

Reisinger said the county has "pushed aside most all of our other emergency response plans to focus on (coronavirus) pandemic plans, and apparently we need all the plans this week for emergency preparedness."

The Buncombe County Courthouse will remain closed for the rest of the day.
