A 3-year-old boy died Friday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of his family’s southwest Atlanta restaurant.

The boy, identified Friday night at Dauda Mangassouba, was hit in a shopping center parking lot in the 3000 block of Campbellton Road shortly before 6 p.m., Atlanta police said.

“The driver was backing out of a parking space, did not see the child and struck the child,” Officer John Chafee told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A small riding toy was left under the small SUV that investigators said hit the child.

Dauda was transported by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital, but did not survive, Chafee said.

No charges have been filed against the driver, who remained at the scene, according to police.

The accident remains under investigation.
