The second Douglas County inmate who fled a work detail last month was caught Thursday morning in Cobb County.
Kenneth Judson Long was captured in Marietta, according to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Glenn Daniel.
Long was recognized from the fliers officers passed out and a citizen contacted Marietta police, Daniel said. Following a short foot chase, Long was apprehended after three weeks at large.
About 12:45 p.m. on June 12, Long and inmate Coleman D. Manessa were working lawn maintenance on Post Road when they found a Crown Victoria with the keys still inside and drove off, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.
The vehicle used in the escape was found June 25 in Marietta and Manessa was arrested the next night in Jefferson County, Ala. Manessa tried to fight extradition from Alabama, but Daniel said he was picked up Wednesday and returned to the Douglas County jail.
“I know that there is an escape charge, but there are pending charges upon further investigation upon interviewing him,” Daniel said.
At a hearing Thursday morning Daniel said a judge denied Manessa’s bond as he is a flight risk and he is facing additional escape and motor vehicle charges.
Long is in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on multiple charges, including obstruction, misdemeanor violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act and giving a false name.
Long and Manessa are non-violent inmates, both originally arrested on charges of burglary, theft by taking and theft by receiving stolen property, authorities said.
