A brief power outage Tuesday at the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant has Atlanta officials asking certain customers to boil their water before using it for cooking, drinking or brushing teeth Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

A news release from the Department of Watershed Management said the outage caused a loss of pressure in the drinking water system for about 13 minutes. The system was restored and was not compromised, but the boil advisory is in effect out of "an abundance of caution" until Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

Households with infants, the elderly and people with immune deficiencies should take particular care, the news release said.

Affected areas are:

  • Gordon Street SE to the north, Lakeview Avenue to the west, Cottage Grove Avenue to the south, 4th Avenue to the east
  • Kirkwood Avenue SE to the north, Chester Avenue to the west, Memorial Drive to the south, Stovall Street to the east

  • McPherson Avenue SE to the north, Moreland Avenue to the west, Glenwood Avenue to the south, Haas Avenue to the east
