So a bear walks into a bar… really!

Sept 25, 2013

Imagine what bartender Ariel Svetlik-McCarthy thought when she looked up to see a black bear coming in through the entrance of the bar at the Alaskan Hotel & Bar in downtown Juneau on Monday night.

The bear look young, so she treated him like an underage customer, Svetlik-McCarthy joked later, shooing him away.

"No bear! Get out! No! You can't be in here!" she shouted.

The bear turned right around and left; his quick in-and-out was caught on surveillance video inside the bar.

Video outside the bar door caught the bear strolling down the sidewalk and then turning in to the bar door, as if that's where he was headed all along.

"As soon as he got to the bar door, it made a left and walked in like he wanted to have a beer," hotel manager C. Scott Fry told KTOO-TV.

An Alaska Fish and Game official told the station that it's unusual for a bear to go into a public building. Hopefully, this bear will stay away because state wildlife officials killed two other "nuisance" bears this summer.
