A Cobb County man died in a house fire early Wednesday, but his wife was able to escape their burning home.
The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. in a home on Wynbrook Road, off Callaway Road in a neighborhood adjacent to Jim Miller Park. Arriving firefighters found “heavy flames” coming from the house, according to Cobb fire spokeswoman Denell Boyd.
Boyd said the woman told firefighters that she could not wake her sleeping husband.
“She said she was ‘shaking and punching’ him but could not wake him, and tried to pull him out and could not,” Boyd told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The woman then ran out of the house to get help from neighbors, but her 58-year-old husband, identified as Arthur Goller of Marietta, was trapped in the bedroom and died.
Fire officials haven’t determined what sparked the fire, which burned through the roof and heavily damaged the brick and siding home.
Boyd said the man’s death was the first fire fatality this year in Cobb County.
