Clayton County on Wednesday added Church Street Elementary School in Riverdale to its growing list of schools that have switched to virtual learning because COVID-19 infections.

The district said the school will go virtual until Aug. 30 because of an increase in COVID-19 infections.

It’s the fourth school in the district that has instituted virtual learning since school began last week because of the coronavirus, which has surged in metro Atlanta because of the delta variant. Children under age 12 are not eligible for COVID-19 vaccines.

The south metro Atlanta district’s Kemp Primary School went virtual on Wednesday through Friday.

Pointe South Middle School and North Clayton High School began the academic year last week virtually because of COVID-19 related illnesses. Both are back to face-to-face instruction, a schools spokesman said.

The district recorded 158 coronavirus cases from July 31 to Aug. 6, according to its website. Of those, 115 cases were students and 43 cases were staff.

Students who receive breakfast and lunch at Church Street Elementary can pick them up along their regular bus routes at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. while they learn virtually, the district said.
