Operations at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were returning to normal Friday morning, after Atlanta police cleared a suspicious item that had prompted the evacuation of some areas of the domestic terminal.

Although the incident has been cleared, it could continue to cause congestion at the airport Friday ahead of the busy Easter holiday travel weekend.

The Transportation Security Administration warned passengers should get to the airport early “as we’ll be working through additional heavy volume.” Hartsfield-Jackson advised travelers to get to the airport at least 2.5 hours before their flights due to longer security wait times.

The TSA had temporarily closed the main checkpoint and south checkpoint while police responded to “a possible threat item.”

Hartsfield-Jackson’s initial statement said officials were responding to a report of a suspicious item at Terminal South. Out of an abundance of caution, they cordoned off the area while authorities investigated.

Delta Air Lines said a bag had been left behind by a customer.

Passengers were evacuated from the terminal by just after 10:30 a.m. At around 11:15 a.m., the airport said the suspicious item had been cleared and operations were returning to normal.
