The Atlanta urban lake is known as "the duck pond" is located in Peachtree Heights East in Buckhead at Lakeview Ave and Demorest Ave. Eretus "Petie" Rivers developed the Peachtree Heights area and after Rivers' death in 1932, his widow declared the duck pond area a park for the residents with the condition that it be preserved in perpetuity. ROBBERY NOT ON THE MENU--September 30, 2013 Atlanta: No injuries were reported Monday, Sept. 30, 2013 in the predawn armed robbery of several customers at a Buckhead Waffle House. The robbery happened just after 6:30 a.m. at the 24-hour diner on Piedmont Road north of Pharr Road. Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said three men were robbed of nearly $40,000 in jewelry and iPhones. She said the victims, who had previously been at the Room Service Lounge, arrived at the Waffle House and sat in a booth at the back of the restaurant by the restrooms. About five minutes later, the two suspects entered and sat down at the counter. A few minutes after that, the suspects got up and went to the booth where the victims were sitting. One sat down while the other stood at the end of the table, Jones said. She said the suspect sitting down "produced a black semi-automatic handgun," pressed it into the ribs of one of the victims, and said, "don't move or say anything. I'll shoot you right here," and "give me your watch and gold chain." The suspects took a $6,000 gold chain and medallion and a diamond-covered Rolex watch valued at $20,000 from one victim, a Rolex Submariner watch valued at $12,000 and a $500 iPhone from the second victim and an iPhone 5 valued at $500 from the third victim. The suspects then left the restaurant and fled on foot. Police have not released a detailed description of the robbers. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

CLOSED FOR BUSINESS--October 1, 2013 Cobb County: Robin Rogers (shown here) on his daily run Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 said he would continue to run through Cochran Shoals at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area should it shut it down. One of the immediate local impacts from the overnight partial shutdown of the federal government will be the shuttering of National Park Service facilities in metro Atlanta, including the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Personnel at Kennesaw Mountain closed the gates to the main parking lot of the park's visitor's center before daybreak Tuesday, but at Cochran Shoals along the Chattahoochee River, the parking lot remained open at 7:30 a.m. The National Park Service's Rudy Evenson told Channel 2 Action News that the 16 Park Service sites along a 48-mile stretch of the river - including Cochran Shoals - would indeed be closed by the partial shutdown of the federal government. At the King Historic Site, Superintendent Judy Forte sent most of her 28 employees home. She said only three Park Service employees would remain on site to handle law enforcement duties. FEDERAL FUNDING CUTOFF--Oct. 3, 2013 - Woodstock - Sarah McCoy gets her Head Start Pre-K students lined up after breakfast. Funding for her position comes from the Federal Government and she will be furloughed if the shutdown continues.
