VET STANDOFF--August 28, 2014 Dekalb County: A Vietnam veteran will not face charges stemming from a predawn SWAT standoff Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 in a DeKalb County neighborhood, police said. Officers were called to a home on Black Oak Drive off Bouldercrest Road before daybreak Thursday on reports of shots being fired. "They found a gentleman in the backyard, randomly taking shots into the wood line," DeKalb police Capt. A.J. Andrzejewski said. "He claimed he saw some people back there." After officers arrived, the man ran back inside the house, firing additional shots. Surrounding houses were evacuated, and after the DeKalb SWAT team negotiated with the man, he came out peacefully, Andrzejewski said. He said the man, who "seemed a little disoriented," told officers he missed an appointment at the V.A. Medical Center on Wednesday. "We're not going to bring any charges against him," Andrzejewski said. "He's a veteran and missed his appointment and we think it's better to get him some assistance at the V.A. hospital." Andrzejewski said police do not believe the man, whose name has not been released, ever aimed shots at officers. "We believe it was just random shots," he said. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

THROWING SHADE--August 22, 2014 Atlanta: A northwest Atlanta window treatment store was hit by smash-and-grab burglars Friday, Aug.22, 2014 for the second time this month. According to Atlanta police dispatchers, a 911 caller reported just before 5 a.m. that three men had busted the windows to The Shade Store in the 1200 block of Howell Mill Road and stole items before driving away in a green Dodge Magnum. The break-in came just three weeks after a similar predawn heist. On August 1, several men took laptops and other electronic items after throwing a brick through the store's window. SMASHED BURGERS--August 26, 2014 Atlanta: Smashburger employee, Ayatollah Lewis cleans up following the smash and grab burglary attempt on her restaurant. Smash-and-grab burglars hit two businesses in the same Buckhead shopping center just before daybreak Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014. The break-ins happened around 6:15 a.m. at the Buckhead Crossing shopping center in the 2600 block of Piedmont Road. The glass doors were shattered at the Smashburger restaurant on one end of the strip center and at the Classic Touch Cleaners on the opposite end of the center. While it wasn't immediately clear what was taken from Smashburger, Classic Touch owner Sanjay Banit said cash was taken from the dry cleaners' register. "Nothing was left in the register, including the tray," Banit told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Everything was gone." Banit said his business, which has been there for 25 years, was burglarized "many, many years ago. We haven't had a break-in in quite a few years." A NEW DIRECTION--August 27, 2014 Atlanta: City of Atlanta Traffic Engineering workers installed new traffic signals Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014 at Martin Luther King Jr Drive where Centennial Olympic Park Drive has now been restriped as a two-way street. The work is part of a rerouted traffic plan that will take traffic off of Spring Street while the Georgia DOT will replace the structurally deficient Spring Street viaduct (bridge) Beginning September 2, 2014 in downtown Atlanta according to the GDOT website. The project on Spring Street is between Mitchell Street and Marietta Street, including Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Forsyth Street and Spring Street. CAR BREAK-INS--August 25, 2014 Atlanta: About 25 cars were broken into early Monday, Aug 25, 2014 at a southeast Atlanta apartment complex hit by similar thefts just two weeks ago. The break-ins were reported shortly after 4 a.m. in the parking lot of the Glenwood East complex on Stovall Street, off Moreland Avenue and just south of I-20, according to Atlanta police. Resident James Hunter said there have been multiple car break-ins at the complex since the beginning of the summer. "It's gotten so bad to where when cars are broken into, residents have to knock on each other's doors in the morning and say, 'Hey, it's happened again. Come out and see if your car is the one that got broken into,' " Hunter said. Two weeks ago, thieves broke into several cars in the lot, Atlanta police Sgt. D. Clements said. That Aug. 11 incident, he said, was "not of this magnitude." Only a handful of the 30 or so cars in the lot were left untouched by the overnight thieves, according to Clements, who said items stolen included an iPad, money and shoes. "One of the residents said that his vehicle was broken into in the previous incident," he said. "He got a rental car while he was getting his car repaired, and now his rental car's gotten broken into." Clements said the complex has security cameras, "but not looking at this parking lot itself."
