A 3-year-old Middle Georgia girl died Saturday afternoon after she fell into a pool at a family gathering, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident, which was ruled an accidental drowning, occurred about 2 p.m. in the 500 block of Pierce Avenue in Macon, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Investigators said the girl, Hattie Slocumb, wandered away from relatives at the gathering. She was later found unresponsive in the pool, the sheriff’s office said.

A family member tried to revive the child until emergency medical services arrived. She was taken to Navicent Health, where she was pronounced dead.
