Get ready to sizzle: Metro Atlanta hit with heat advisory Friday
Find a fan. Slap on some sunscreen. Fill up a water bottle. It’s gonna be a fry-day.
Friday looks to be another scorcher, with temperatures high enough to prompt the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m. The advisory area covers much of Middle and North Georgia, including metro Atlanta.
Expect highs to reach the mid-90s on Friday, but the feels-like temperature, which factors in humidity, will push the heat index value up to 106, the Weather Service predicts. Add sunny skies with only a small chance for showers, and the full steaminess of the forecast emerges.
The Weather Service warns the temperatures plus high humidity “may cause heat illnesses.” Try to limit vigorous outside activity and wear light and loose clothing, the agency advises.
On Thursday, the region is expected to reach a high near 94, with a slightly less blazing heat index value of 100, according to the Weather Service. A reading at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport topped that temp projection, hitting 95 degrees just after 2 p.m., Weather Service data showed.
Thursday’s weather has been toasty enough to trigger a heat advisory from 1-8 p.m. across parts of east and Middle Georgia, including Athens, Macon and Columbus. Those places could see heat index values rise to 108 degrees Thursday, the Weather Service cautioned. Thursday’s alert does not include Atlanta.
“Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the agency said.
Clayton County Public Schools on Thursday canceled outdoor activities, including physical education classes and recesses.
This weekend and into early next week, expect high temperatures to remain in the mid-90s, the Weather Service said.
