Rain produces wet roads in Atlanta for returning holiday travelers

There will be plenty of rainfall in metro Atlanta on Sunday as residents return during one of the holiday week’s busiest road travel days.
Drivers full from turkey should be wary on the wet roads, especially with the heaviest congestion period estimated between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
“Be extra careful getting out on the roadways, you might encounter some slippery spots,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon warned.
With the wet and chilly weather, Atlantans should bundle up and keep an umbrella handy.
A cold front even produced some light freezing rain in higher-elevation areas of northeast Georgia early in the morning. A significant accumulation of ice and snow was not expected, the National Weather Service said.
Reported cancellations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport remained low amid the rainy weather, though 9% of departures were delayed Sunday morning, according to FlightAware.com.
On Sunday afternoon, there will be a high of 50 degrees before temperatures drop again overnight. Things will start off dry and cloudy by Monday morning until a push of moisture produces additional rainfall in the afternoon.
The heaviest rain will continue overnight until Tuesday. Up to 2 inches is projected during that time, though some areas could see higher amounts of precipitation, the NWS said.
The rain was certainly needed following a recent drought in metro Atlanta, Deon said. But it won’t stay cloudy forever, with sunshine expected to return Wednesday and Thursday.
Another round of rain is possible Friday, the NWS said.
