Cold front bringing first widespread freeze of the season this week

Residents should enjoy their last bit of comfortable weather Sunday before a blast of arctic air brings projected freezing conditions to metro Atlanta in the coming days.
Highs will be in the upper 60s Sunday before plummeting due to the cold front and heavy winds, according to the National Weather Service.
“It’s going to turn windy this afternoon as the very cold air begins to make its way to North Georgia,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Sunday.
Temperatures will continue to drop as the front produces what will be the first widespread freeze of the season Monday, arriving a couple weeks earlier than usual. So prep your pipes and make sure your pets and plants are safe and warm.
The freezing conditions are expected by Monday night into Tuesday, with temperatures reaching the low to mid-20s across the state, according to the NWS. Highs are projected to stay in the 40s during that time, though low temperatures will feel like the teens.
“It’s going to feel colder with the wind,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
In response to the upcoming cold, the National Weather Service announced a freeze warning from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday for portions of North Georgia and metro Atlanta. Residents were advised to start making preparations for the cold.
It also led officials to open warming centers in both Gwinnett County and DeKalb County, where Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Center and the Mystery Valley Golf Club were temporarily closed Monday and Tuesday.
The five DeKalb warming centers will be open from 6:30 p.m. Sunday to Tuesday at 2585 Gresham Road, 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Road, 1340 McConnell Drive, 2771 Columbia Drive and 2944 Ember Drive.
In Gwinnett, they will be available from 6 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday at 2755 Sawnee Ave., 2750 Pleasant Hill Road, 6224 Jimmy Carter Blvd., 3025 Bethany Church Road and 225 Benson St.
For those expecting a winter wonderland, the cold blast likely won’t produce flurries in metro Atlanta.
The city’s freeze typically happens around Nov. 19, with Atlanta last seeing temps at or below freezing on Feb. 23 this year.
But warm weather is on the horizon after the freeze. Temperatures are projected to be in the low 70s from Thursday to Saturday, Monahan said.
