If you’ve been hankering for some cooler fall weather, the next few days will be a treat. But don’t get too used to it. Warmer temperatures are waiting in the wings.

“We are set up for what’s going to be an outstanding fall weekend,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

Although Wednesday will bring rain and warmth, high temperatures will dip into the 70s starting Thursday and continuing through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

But first, light, widespread showers have been hovering over metro Atlanta on Wednesday morning, making for slick roads on the ride to work or school ahead of the cold front approaching the city.

Moderate drought conditions have set in across the metro area, so any rain is welcome. But what we get Wednesday is not expected to bring “substantial” relief, the Weather Service said. The agency predicts a quarter inch or less for most locations. A few spots could see a little more.

By late morning, most showers should be dissipating. They’re expected to redevelop over Middle Georgia later this afternoon as the cold front reaches that area.

Closer to the city, mostly dry conditions will return for the foreseeable future as temperatures drop, but it won’t be an immediate or drastic dip. Wednesday’s high temperatures should still climb into the mid 80s.

But “overnight, our weather completely changes,” Monahan said. “The wind is going to pick up; it’s going to be a northeast wind. That means more clouds and some sprinkles tomorrow.”

Thursday’s highs will top out around the upper 60s, with the city expected to reach just 71 degrees. That is below the average high of 78 for this time of year.

The cool shot won’t last long, though. By the middle of next week, highs should be back in the mid 80s — a return to higher-than-average temps, according to the Weather Service.
