A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed Monday evening while trying to cross a Clayton County highway, authorities said.

The wreck happened about 10 p.m. near the intersection of Ga. 85 and Lakeview Drive in Riverdale, Clayton police said in an alert.

“The preliminary investigation shows the juvenile was attempting to cross the roadway and was struck by a vehicle which remained on scene,” department spokeswoman Officer Aubriel Stroud said Tuesday.

The crash is still being investigated, and authorities have not said if the driver could face any charges.

The busy road was shut down for more than two hours as police investigated. All lanes reopened about 12:30 a.m., Stroud said.
