A woman was killed and a man was injured Tuesday morning during a shootout with deputies in South Georgia, authorities said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 5 a.m. when the Camden County Sheriff’s Office executed a drug-related search warrant at a home along U.S. 17 in Woodbine, the GBI said in a news release.

“Law enforcement knocked and announced themselves before making entry into the residence,” the GBI said. “Upon entry, there was an exchange of gunfire between the occupants of the residence ... and law enforcement.”

Latoya Denise James, 37, was killed in the shootout, officials said. The man, identified as 46-year-old Varshawn Lamont Brown, was wounded and taken to the hospital. No deputies were injured in the shootout.

Tuesday’s incident is the 27th police shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate this year and the 12th that resulted in a fatality, according to state records.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.

Once the GBI’s investigation into the shooting is complete, the agency’s findings will be turned over to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
