Winship offers free screenings for head, neck cancers on Thursday

The Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University will offer free screenings for oral, head and neck cancers on Thursday.

The screenings will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at Emory University Hospital Midtown’s Head and Neck Clinic, 550 Peachtree St. N.E. . No appointment is necessary

The screenings are part of a nationwide screening campaign. Physicians perform the screenings; staff and volunteers (including former patients) will answer questions and provide educational support.

Alcohol and tobacco use are the two biggest risk factors for head and neck cancers, which are nearly twice as common among men as women. A growing number of head and neck cancers are related to infection with human papillomavirus (HPV).
