Watch these 500 Cobb County band students perform together — virtually

The video shows hundreds of Cobb County students all performing “Shimmering Joy”

The school district took on the huge undertaking of creating the first ever ?Cobb County Virtual Band."

Getting an ensemble of 500 musicians to perform together is no small feat in normal times, let alone in the era of social distancing.

But that didn’t stop hundreds of Cobb County band students from all 17 of the district’s high schools from coming together to play — all from the comfort of their own homes.

Spreading some joyful tunes, the students each recorded themselves performing "Shimmering Joy" from Atlanta composer Tyler Grant. The compilation of the students performing the piece was posted Tuesday on YouTube.

The first ever “Cobb County Virtual band” was a “massive undertaking,” the description on the YouTube video states.

After performing the piece in their own home, the students submitted files to be edited together.

"At 500 video and audio files submitted this compilation video makes use of all usable files,” the post reads. “With so many files from many different devices not all the video files were at the proper size or frame rate and could not be used. We did include all of our performers in the credits at the end and are very proud of all who submitted. Go CCSD Band Kids!!!"

According to the post on YouTube, Joe Huls, the assistant director of bands at McEachern High School edited the files together for the final performance.
