Georgia — in particular, this part of Georgia — is overflowing with waterfalls.
So much so, in fact, that they, er, fall into a couple of categories: Hidden gems you can easily hike to in nearby Vinings or Roswell. And more well-known raging beauties a little farther north, like L'Eau d'Or Falls, which, along with several others in Tallulah Gorge in Rabun County, arguably was one of the biggest stars of the movie "Deliverance."
No surprise, then, that there’s an app for that. The “Discover Georgia’s Waterfalls” app [link to story] provides great background and up-to-the-minute driving directions to more than 50 waterfalls spread across nine counties in North Georgia. You can even plot your path from one waterfall to the next courtesy of the app, which is free in both the iTunes and Google Play stores.
Why climb the 600-some wooden steps to the top of Amicalola Falls in winter? Well, why not? The tallest cascading waterfall in the entire Southeast at 729 feet, Amicalola is the crown jewel of a state park that sits at one end of the Appalachian Trail. There'll be a lot less elbow room there come spring and summer as hikers begin their assault of the famed 2,175-mile trail.
