Every Sept. 11, the Koblasz family lines their driveway in Cumming with American flags and takes time to gather around a red-white-and-blue frosted birthday cake in their home.
And this year, daughter Katie will blow out 10 candles.
A chubby, peaceful baby, Katie brought new life into this world on a day terrorism claimed the lives of 2,977 people. She arrived at 10:29 p.m. with a wisp of blonde hair, one of 436 babies born in Georgia on Sept. 11, 2001. She didn’t make a peep for 15 minutes.
Nine years ago, as these babies turned 1, and the nation was still reeling from the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, the AJC interviewed a handful of families with children born on Sept. 11.
Now, 10 years later, the significance of that day has only deepened. In different ways, the tragedy has fused with their children’s identities, shaped their aspirations and changed how their parents see the world.
In Sunday's newspaper, the AJC catches up with metro Atlanta children born on Sept. 11, 2001. It's a story you'll get only by picking up a copy of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution or logging on to the paper's iPad app. Subscribe today.
