Mothers are expressing concern about bras they say may send the wrong message to their daughters.
Some stores are carrying padded bras in sizes some parents say appear intended for young girls.
KNSD reported that a mother shared a photo on Facebook that depicted Maidenform padded bras in very small sizes, indicating they may be designed for young girls.
"It's hard enough being a young girl developing early, maybe before you're emotionally ready for it, and then dealing with seeing things like padded bras," Amy Yates, who is a mother, told KNSD. "That's sexualizing children way too early. My girls are very interested in things like origami and Pokemon at their age. They're 9. They don't need to go to the store and see bras that are lacy and sexy and marketed toward them."
But Dr. Lisa Johnston, an Ob-Gyn and mother of three girls, told KNSD some padding could give girls who are developing early more self-confidence.
"The Maidenform bras developed for girls are not meant to 'enhance' a girl's figure," Hanesbrands, the company that owns Maidenform, said in a statement to KNSD. "The 'padding' is thin stretch foam and is designed to provide modesty over figure enhancement."
