Missed prom? Fernbank is offering a chance to make up for it this summer

5 facts about prom The word "prom" is short for "promenade," which is the formal, introductory parading of party-goers. Proms weren't always for high schoolers. They began as simple co-ed banquets at 19th century American universities for each graduating class. More teenagers led proms to skew younger and younger, and they began being held in high schools in the 1940s. At prom, teen girls typically wear a corsage on their dress or their wrist and teen boys wear a boutonniere pinned to their jacket lapel.

If you didn’t get the chance to attend your high school prom or want to relive the magic of the night, Fernbank Museum’s summer event is a must.

The facility focused on nature and science is hosting an adult prom called Adult Prom: Roaring '20s. Happening Friday, June 26, it has a roaring '20s theme fit for the new decade.

Guests can attend the adults-only gathering for $21.95, the price for members and non-members. Craft beer, wine, themed cocktails and small bites will also be available for purchase.

“Get dolled up in your best retro ‘20s attire and celebrate the decade that brought us flappers and gangsters at Fernbank’s Adult Prom: Roaring ‘20s, exclusively for adults,” reads the event description.

For attendees who purchased tickets before the adult prom was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Fernbank posted the following notice on the event page.

"If you purchased tickets to the event, you will receive an email from Guest.Services@FernbankMuseum.org with additional information."

Guests who didn't receive an email by April 1, are asked to call (404) 929-6400 or email Guest.Services@FernbankMuseum.org.

The promenade will be held in Fernbank’s Great Hall, where the world’s largest dinosaurs will watch under the 86-foot ceiling as guests cut a rug. Music from Amp’d Entertainment will play decade-spanning tunes while attendees can snap pictures to take home in a 1920s photo booth.

Plus, guests can test their sense in an experimental exhibition, Our Senses: An Immersive Experience.
