It’s time to break the ice.  Spring is upon us and we’re moving into premier dating season.  As Atlantans, we have tons of variety at our fingertips when it comes to first dates, but why is it that we always tend to revert to the predictable and mundane standard dinner date when it counts the most?  First impressions are everything, and you’ll have a leg-up with some of these first date ideas.

1. Let your first-date butterflies take flight at Atlanta's 57th Fighter Group Restaurant.  Located off Clairmont Road on the grounds adjacent to Dekalb Peachtree Airport, this is a unique spot to enjoy a delicious meal or cocktail on the runway.  There's something very romantic about watching planes come and go on a clear, starry night, and the place is fully equipped with conversation pieces ranging from authentic World War II memorabilia to classic planes and retro charm.  Check out their website for a variety of specials and events throughout the week.

2. Cruise around the city on one of Atlanta's signature bike tours through Bicycle Tours of Atlanta.  Many say this is one of the best ways to see the ins and outs of the ATL, and it's a great, active alternative to sitting across from each other at the coffee shop.  Customize your tour by calling ahead to give your guide some ideas about what you'd like to see, or book one of their regularly scheduled themed tours that will surely lead you to some cool spots worth talking about over frozen yogurt or a late lunch to follow.

3. Choose your toppings carefully at one of Atlanta's favorite pizza places: Ammazza.  Choice in pizza can reveal a lot about someone on a first date, and sharing a few slices is a great way to start learning about each other.  Conveniently located on Edgewood in Old Fourth Ward, Ammazza is among some fun and unique post-dinner destinations.  Edgewood Speakeasy is a nice little secret that is sure to impress your date if he or she isn't familiar with this vibrant hideaway behind a bookshelf.

4. Revisit a favorite childhood outing with a day at Zoo Atlanta.  There are many sights and sounds that virtually eliminate the possibility of an awkward silence or lag in conversation, and it's just good clean fun! Private "wild encounters" with some of the most exciting species are also available at additional cost.

5. Explore Atlanta's past at the Atlanta History Center.  This place is home to lush gardens, the historic Swan House, several engaging exhibits and more.  Spring is the ideal time to enjoy both indoor and outdoor offerings that will not only keep you engaged in an interactive history lesson of our home, but will also serve as a picturesque backdrop to a first encounter with someone special.  If you're really hitting it off, it's also steps away from several surrounding restaurants and bars that may help extend the date.  Try Coast Seafood and Raw Bar or King and Duke just down the street.
