A compassionate detective saved Christmas for three children after meeting the siblings during a child abuse investigation in Bellevue.
The case involved a 4-year-old boy who was severely beaten by his mother's boyfriend, according to the Bellevue Police Department. Authorities said the mother, who was not identified, struggled to make ends meet after her boyfriend was arrested. He was the sole financial provider for the woman and her three children: an 11-month-old, a 4-year-old and an 11-year-old.
Bellevue Det. Rachel Neff understood that without help, the family would have no place to live -- and the mother would have no chance to provide Christmas for her children.
Neff reached out to her colleagues with the Bellevue Police Department who “stepped up in a big way,” the department said.
Department and community members donated gifts and cash. They also spent time wrapping the children’s presents.
On Tuesday, Neff and the police department -- with a special appearance from Santa -- delivered the presents and help to the family. In a Facebook post, BPD officers said they hoped they helped “transform a desperate situation into a happy holiday.”
