Summer is a great time to learn more about your family.

There are family reunions, summer trips to visit relatives and more spare time to research the family tree.

Here’s an event that might help you get started.

The Georgia Genealogical Society and the Georgia Archives will hold a free summer genealogy picnic from 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the archives, 5800 Jonesboro Rd. in Morrow.

The event is open to the public.

Speakers include Judith F. Russell, who will discuss the “Ask Granny” program; Valerie Frey, author of “Preserving Family Recipes: How to Save and Celebrate Your Food Traditions”; Hunter Gentry, a college student, who will discuss what inspired him to begin researching his family history and how to get young people interested in genealogy; and Kenneth H. Thomas Jr., who will talk about finding descendants of those buried in a cemetery.

A sandwich lunch with chips, cookies and lemonade will be available for a donation. Participants may bring lunches.

There will also be exhibits by historical and genealogical societies and genealogy books will be for sale.
