You could meet your soul mate at North Point Mall this weekend, but it may not be of the human variety.

On Jan. 4, shoppers visiting the Alpharetta shopping center will get the chance to meet adoptable puppies and kittens from Angels Among Us Pet Rescue.

Statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals state that each year, approximately 6.5 million pets enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide. It's estimated that number has declined by 7.2 million since 2011. About 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized annually. However, that number has dropped from about 2.6 million in 2011. This is thanks in part to increased adoptions and the successful return of stray pets to their owners. Meanwhile, about 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted yearly.
