A home for the holidays? Alpharetta shelter hosts pet adoption event

Mister and Misses have been together six years, since they were puppies. Their owner surrendered them to an animal shelter in Atlanta, and they arrived at Best Friends Lifesaving Center in April. The Best Friends staff soon realized how devoted the pooches were to each other, and decided they should marry. Mister had a bachelor party, and Misses was fitted for a dress. The happy couple shared a spoonful of peanut butter to make it official. And what wedding is complete without a honeymoon to Hawaii?

If you’ve decided that you’re ready to commit to a furry friend, there’s a pet adoption event happening in Alpharetta this weekend.

From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelter and Fido’s Market are co-hosting the final pet adoption gathering of 2019 on Saturday.

Those ready to find their life-long fur pal can come by pet supply store Fido’s Market and meet their potential new family members. The shelter, touted as Georgia’s largest animal rescue, regularly offers discounts for seniors, military personnel and first responders. The adoption fee is $0 for cats ages 10 or older or those who are FIV+ or have feline leukemia.

But while your heart may be open to rescuing an animal, experts want to make sure everyone is in on the idea of welcoming a furry new family member. As such, it’s not seen as a good idea to give a pet as a Christmas gift.

“We don’t think giving pets as gifts is ever a good idea,” PAWS Atlanta Executive Director Nancy Longacre previously told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We want every pet to feel like and be treated like a member of the family. So, in order to make that happen, everybody in the family needs to meet that pet and make sure it’s the right fit for everyone who is living in the home. Once that happens, then the likelihood that it’s going to be a successful adoption or placement is really, really high.”

Experts say the key is finding a pet that fits your lifestyle. If you enjoy relaxing, for example, a high-energy Jack Russell terrier may not exactly be the lap dog you’re looking for.
