Bishop David P. Talley of the Archdiocese of Atlanta has been named coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria, La.

Most recently, Talley, 66, served as auxiliary bishop in Atlanta, a position he has held since 2013.

The move is significant because it gives the Columbus-born Talley the first right to succeed Bishop Donald P. Herzog, 74, the current bishop of Alexandria when he retires.

The diocese of Alexandria has more than 36,000 Catholics.

Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory said in a statement that the Louisiana diocese is getting a “tremendous pastoral gift. Bishop Talley is a servant minister of our church, who is graced with extraordinary wisdom, patience, kindness, and dedication.”

He was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Atlanta in 1989.

Other assignments here included parochial vicar, St. Jude Parish in Sandy Springs; interim administrator at St. Matthew’s Parish in Tyrone; pastor, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Alpharetta; and pastor, St. Brigid Parish in Johns Creek, 2011-2013.

He also served on the archdiocesan levels as director of vocations, tribunal judge, chancellor, and a member of the archdiocesan Hispanic ministry board.
