They’re the ones who arrive first on the scene.

Often, they’re also the least appreciated.

At 10 a.m. Friday, though, the Archdiocese of Atlanta will celebrate its annual "Blue Mass" for public safety officials and first responders at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Rd. N.E.

There will also be a blessing of the badges.

Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory will be the Mass celebrant.

The tradition began in the United States in 1934, when the Rev. Thomas Dade of the Archdiocese of Baltimore formed the Catholic Police and Fireman’s Society and celebrated the first Blue Mass for police officers and firemen that year.

It will also be a way to remember those who died on 9/11.

The public is invited to attend mass to pray and show their appreciation. A small reception at Kenny Hall will follow.
