Wayne "Ean" Evans, bassist for the legendary Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died after a lengthy battle with cancer, according to his Web site. He was 48.

Evans, an Atlanta native, joined the band in 2001 after the death of bassist Leon Wilkeson.

A statement on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Web site said, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of longtime Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Ean Evans. Ean put up a valiant battle with an aggressive form of cancer and he will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans."

It's the second death of a Skynyrd band member this year. Billy Powell, the former keyboardist, died in January.

In 1977 three members of the Jacksonville-based band, best known for hits "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," "Gimme Three Steps" and others, died in a plane crash in Mississippi.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is currently on tour, and there was no word immediately on whether tour dates would be affected by Evans' death. The band is scheduled to perform with Kid Rock on June 28 at Lakewood Amphitheatre.
