In the new movie "Monsters vs. Aliens," keep an eye on B.O.B.

A brainless blob, B.O.B. (voiced by Seth Rogen) is a lab experiment gone wrong, an acronym for Bicarbonate Ostylezene Benzoate. At one point in the movie, he does battle, in his rather limited blobby way, with another one-eyed creature, an alien robot probe.

They're the latest in a pantheon of fictional characters with one big eye, a line that stretches back to the beginning of Western literature. Here are some notables who've been famous for having half the number of usual eyes. (Characters with eyepatches don't count.)

• Cyclops (the original). In Greek mythology, a cyclops was a giant with one eye in his forehead. The most famous was Polyphemus, the cyclops who fought Odysseus in "The Odyssey." The plural of cyclops, by the way? Cyclopes.

• Cyclops (the X-Men). Technically not one-eyed, but considered part of the cyclops heritage, he's a mutant who shoots optic blasts through a visor.

• Leela from "Futurama." The hottest one-eyed cartoon babe ever. Not that there's a lot of competition.

• Gort from "The Day the Earth Stood Still." An alien robot who zaps anything he doesn't like, from the so-cheesy-it's-adored 1951 sci-fi movie.

• Muno from "Yo Gabba Gabba." Friendly one-eyed thingamajig on the popular Nickelodeon pre-school show.

• The One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater. Often sung about, never actually seen.
