Atlanta Barbecue: Meet the pitmaster of Grand Champion BBQ

These 2019 metro Atlanta barbecue events promise meaty fun

Enjoy the outdoors, music and, of course, lots and lots of barbecue at these upcoming metro Atlanta events:

Drink and eat up at the second Bourbon & BBQ hosted by the Junior League of DeKalb County. Tickets include barbecue from amateur and professional pitmasters from DeKalb County, as well as a bar featuring several types of bourbons, ryes and American whiskeys.

2-6 p.m. April 27. $45. Mary Gay House, 716 W. Trinity Place, Decatur.

Join Meals on Wheels Atlanta for Hogs and Hops, a new addition this year to the nonprofit’s annual Sunday Supper Series. Enjoy barbecue from Nick Leahy of Aix, Rusty Bowers of Pine Street Market and Savannah Sasser of the Expat in Athens, plus live music and craft beer from Second Self Beer Co. All proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels Atlanta’s flagship program.

2 p.m. May 5. $60. Second Self Beer Co., 1317 Logan Circle NW, Atlanta.

Learn about the history of barbecue in America with author Jim Auchmutey, who writes in his new book, “Smoke Lore: A Short History of Barbecue in America,” about important barbecue events, from the ox roast that celebrated the groundbreaking for the U.S. Capitol building to the first barbecue launched into space almost 200 years later. Auchmutey also served as consulting curator for the Atlanta History Center exhibition, “Barbecue Nation,” on display through Sept. 29.

7 p.m. May 23. $10, $5 for members. Atlanta History Center, 130 W. Paces Ferry Road NW, Atlanta.

Meat on the grill is one of the attractions at the Atlanta Kosher BBQ Festival, set for September in Sandy Springs.

Try a bit of everything during the Smoke on the Lake BBQ Festival, presented in association with the Georgia Barbecue Association and the North Cobb Rotary Club. Teams can compete in a variety of categories, including Lord of the Wings, Mystery Meat and People’s Choice Pork. In addition to sampling barbecue, look for live music, entertainment and a kids zone. Proceeds will go to charity.

Enjoy barbecue and music at the 19th annual Decatur BBQ Blues & Bluegrass Festival, which features meat from a variety of vendors, including Sweet Auburn Barbecue, Grand Champion BBQ and Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q, plus tunes from several blues and bluegrass bands. There’s also a kids area.

1-9 p.m. Aug. 10. Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive, Decatur.

The 19th annual Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival will offer barbecue from several different vendors, as well as live music and a kids area.

6-10 p.m. Aug. 23, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Aug. 24. Adams Park, 2753 Watts Drive, Kennesaw.

Tear into your favorite meats during the seventh annual Atlanta Kosher BBQ Festival. More than 20 teams will compete to make the best beef, ribs, chili and chicken, and attendees get to sample the results, while enjoying live music, vendors and a kids zone. Proceeds will go to charity.

11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sept. 8. City Green at City Springs, 1 Galambos Way, Sandy Springs.

Try barbecue from a variety of vendors at the Taste of BBQ Festival, which also will feature live music, an artists market and a kids zone. The event is a fundraiser for Project Green, a local kids nonprofit.

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 12. Suwanee Town Center Park, 330 Town Center Ave., Suwanee.
