Join Meals on Wheels Atlanta for Hogs and Hops, a new addition this year to the nonprofit’s annual Sunday Supper Series. Enjoy barbecue from Nick Leahy of Aix, Rusty Bowers of Pine Street Market and Savannah Sasser of the Expat in Athens, plus live music and craft beer from Second Self Beer Co. All proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels Atlanta’s flagship program.

Learn about the history of barbecue in America with author Jim Auchmutey, who writes in his new book, “Smoke Lore: A Short History of Barbecue in America,” about important barbecue events, from the ox roast that celebrated the groundbreaking for the U.S. Capitol building to the first barbecue launched into space almost 200 years later. Auchmutey also served as consulting curator for the Atlanta History Center exhibition, “Barbecue Nation,” on display through Sept. 29.

Try a bit of everything during the Smoke on the Lake BBQ Festival, presented in association with the Georgia Barbecue Association and the North Cobb Rotary Club. Teams can compete in a variety of categories, including Lord of the Wings, Mystery Meat and People’s Choice Pork. In addition to sampling barbecue, look for live music, entertainment and a kids zone. Proceeds will go to charity.

Enjoy barbecue and music at the 19th annual Decatur BBQ Blues & Bluegrass Festival, which features meat from a variety of vendors, including Sweet Auburn Barbecue, Grand Champion BBQ and Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q, plus tunes from several blues and bluegrass bands. There’s also a kids area.
