Sookie and Snooki. So different and yet so similar.

For both of them, television has been the platform for double somersaults into the zeitgeist. Sookie Stackhouse (portrayed by Oscar-winner Anna Paquin) is the heroine of HBO's gothic drama "True Blood" and the Charlaine Harris novels the series is based on. Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi is the diminutive party girl and de facto star of MTV's reality show "Jersey Shore."

The shows are hits for their respective cable networks, with about 4.5 million watching "True Blood" and 4.8 million tuning in to "Jersey Shore's" Season 1 finale, according to the Nielsen Co.

Huge numbers? No. But the buzz around these shows has been fervent, especially during the ramp-up to the Season 2 premiere of "Jersey Shore" at 10 p.m. Thursday.
