Who says all that text messaging is a waste of time?

Etowah High School students know differently. Students of the south Cherokee school recently showed their mastery of texting — sending a blizzard of 500,000 in a 10-day period — to win a concert with American Idol finalist Kellie Pickler.

On Monday, Pickler will perform a private concert at Etowah as the grand prize of a radio contest sponsored by WKHX-FM (Kicks 101.5).

The radio station challenged students across metro Atlanta to send in the name of their school, along with that of Pickler, during a 10-day period. More than 2 million text messages were received, and more than one-quarter of those came from Etowah High students and supporters.

When Pickler learned the results of the contest, she said, according to her Web site, "Are you serious? Two million texts? That's crazy ... that's like Idol crazy. I'm so excited to be doing this show, and I haven't been out of high school very long myself, so it's like playing for my peers. I hope they don't make me take class while I'm there!"

The acoustic event was designed for an auditorium setting, but with Etowah's student body in excess of 2,300, the show was moved to the football stadium and bumped up to full band, the site said.
