Dunwoody Library Book Club

Barbara Schlefman, Dunwoody

How often it meets: Monthly

About this club: It was  started last September by Schlefman, who helped found a book club based at the Tucker library branch several years ago. "When I approached the head librarian, he was overjoyed that someone would take this on," Schlefman said. The club is open to the public and has about 25 members, with about 15 attending each meeting. Men are welcome, but currently all members are women. Meetings are held at 6:45 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. Members take turns acting as facilitators, using a list of discussion questions. Past books include: "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See and "Gap Creek" by Robert Morgan. Upcoming titles include: "The Color of Water" by James McBride, "Praying for Sheetrock" by Melissa Fay Greene, "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls and "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. Members will select additional titles in October and should come with recommendations, including the number of pages, publication date, cost and whether it's available in softcover, in the library and on Kindle, Schlefman said.

Recently read: "The Necklace" by Cheryl Jarvis. It is a true story about a group of California women who buy a diamond necklace together with the intention of sharing it. They must work together to figure out the terms of the unconventional arrangement. The necklace ends up enabling them to help their community and learn about themselves.

What members thought: They enjoyed discussing the various characters, including which of the 13 women they identified  with most and which they liked best, Schlefman said. Members also talked about how they would respond if approached with a similar proposition. "I could not talk my group into doing a joint venture to buy an RV with me," Schlefman joked.

Next assignment: "Travels with Charley" by John Steinbeck
